Urban Prototype 2 – Sustainable Urban Home

Prototype 2 is a four bedroom two and a half bath sustainable urban home designed to provide plenty of outdoor recreation space on a tight lot.  Climate control is provided passively through numerous openings and routed through the home via the stack effect of a central stair tower.  Operable clerestory windows situated in an elevated secondary roof on the second floor enhance passive cooling by venting warm air typically found in under-roof levels directly to the outside.  Exterior materials are western red cedar, concrete panel board, aluminum panel and Galvalume standing seam.

Covered balconies are provided adjacent to several rooms throughout the home.  A sun deck situated on the garage roof is accessible from all levels and offers a sunny place to spend the afternoon or an evening refuge.

Solar thermal collectors and photovoltaic panels mounted to the roof provide a source for heat and electricity.  Rain water collected in an underground cistern provides for irrigation and non-potable uses.  Other options may include geo-thermal heating and cooling and a grey water recovery system.
