Urban Prototype 1 – Sustainable Urban Home
One of several homes in development, this typical urban residential prototype utilizes several strategies for sustainability and self sufficiency. Constructed of SIP (structural insulated panel) panels and an ICF (insulated concrete forms) foundation, this home benefits from a superior energy efficient envelop and can to be erected in a short amount of time with less construction waste. The exterior materials are western red cedar, which has a natural durability to decay, and aluminum composite wall panel.
The configuration of the home maximizes the use of natural daylight and provides views by recessing and projecting spaces along the sides of the building. Passive-stack ventilation is achieved through the use of a central stair tower which, through natural convection, creates a vacuum which draws air through the home via an upward moving air current. This stair tower also allows access to a green roof which not only increases the energy efficiency of the home but also provides an extended outdoor recreation space.
Solar thermal collectors and photovoltaic panels provide source for heat and electricity. Rain water harvesting provides for irrigation and non-potable uses. Other options may include geo-thermal heating and cooling and a grey water recovery system.
